clutch cable for my 65' dream

Post by FLYHAVEN2001 » Fri Aug 12, 2005 8:37 pm

I want to replace my cable but have not been succesful in finding the right one. Mine is the shorter one about 44" which includes cable and housing length. I got one on ebay that is about 50"- no chrome elbow, but the cable end that is sticking out of housing is 1/2 longer than mine which may cause me to run out of adjustment on the clutch since I will have to make-up the 1/2 inch in length somewhere. Anyone find the exact one yet?thanks

Hay Fly,

I think I know why you are having trouble finding the correct cable. Didn’t Honda change the placement of the entrance of the cable from the rear of the right case to the center? I'm not sure but I think this was sometime in 65.

The early style used the longer cable that ran through the frame to the coil cover and out to the rear of the right case. Because after entering the case it has to travel 1/3 the length of the case to where it connects it would have a longer cable lead (cable only, no shroud)

The later style used a shorter cable that entered the case at the top and came from under the tank, and because it enters the case closer to its attachment point the cable lead is shorter.
Old bikes like old men, sometimes you have to kick start them

Thanks- I was aware of the cable change. I have seen the longer ones on ebay on ocassion. I have not seen the shorter ones though. I wanted one with the chrome elbow. I have two engines, one I think is a 64' and one is a 65' and one took the longer cable. I put the 65' side cover on the 64' motor so I can use my shorter cable. I may just look for the longer cable and clean up the 64' side cover and us it. Also, the cables on ebay have a longer cable. The ends are about and 1/2" longer which may cause adjustment problems. thanks Joe
