patroy, Welcom to our forum! First, I hope others will jump in on this as Iv'e never experienced a problem like yours. So I'm guessing. I would look at the clutch lifter rod and associated bits that move it.Do you have a shop manual? I'd recomend it. I assume you have a cb or cl or ca. To access the clutch lifter rod remove the right side engine cover. You can let it hang by the clutch cable. The clutch lifter rod end sticks out a bit so you can grab it and pull it out. Check it for straightness and see if it has some lube on it. Next check the pivot and associated parts the cable attaches to for exess grunge and see if it needs lube too. That is a place to start, let us know what you find, good luck.Steve Greer

Hi thanks for the reply
i found the problem
it was the clutch cable that was probably too short .Would you know how the cable should make its way from the right cover to the clutch handle for a CA77 1966 ? Thanks

Pat roy somewhere on this forum I saw a discussion on cable routing for a CA. Or ask Ryan Sefrin.(on this forum) He might know. All my bikes are CBs. Good Luck! Steve Greer

If you have a 66' the cable should come straight down from about the petcock and up along frame between tank and then around steering knuckle, then thru hole in headlight housing.I find it hard to believe that your cable is too short. When you pull cable tight(not installed on bike) you should have about 5 1/2" of cable sticking out at bottom.Your cable should be about 42" I think in total length. There is a longer version also for earlier bikes that the cable comes out of solenoid cover.Mine did the same thing. I was using an old cable and I thought I had cleaned and flushed it out good, but I flushed more gunk out of it and then used the proper lube and it works ok now.

Your bike is probably early 65' or 64'. My friend has a bike that his dad bought new in 64' and the cable routes thru coil cover.
