clutch

Post by patroy » Mon May 22, 2006 6:39 am

hi I routed my cable thru the coil box and the frame and it is still a bit stiff i'm thinking of changing the clutch cable joint to a later model that goes straight up to the tank . Do I need to change the right side cover or just the clutch cable joint ?

Are you using a new and lubed (do not use grease if it has the grease fitting)cable ? I had a similar problem when hot(barely pull in lever) with an old cable.I have a new cable on and it does not do this now. Even with a new cable there is a different feel to it when it warms up.Seems to be an inherent problem on these bikes from what I have been told. The clutch can be adjusted to work great when cold but will get more play when hot.Have you taken the right side cover off and checked the clutch mechanism and clutch push rod for being bent?Until I figured out how they worked and how to adjust them and got new cable I was really fighting my clutch. If you were going to use a shorter cable and route it along the tank and down you should probably go with the later style side cover.I also switched to NAPA 30w non-detergent oil per loudmouse on this site.I was told it would not foam like the new detergent oils which could cause clutch issues.Joe

thanks for the reply I just chabged the short cable that I had routing by the tank for a long cable routing thru the electrical box. when i route the cable by the tank the clutch is smooth and works fine but since I have the older cable joint that has a 45 ° angle i decided to put the correct cable thru the electrical box and it is a bit stiff to operate .anybody knows where I can get a clutch cable joint that goes straight up toward the tank .

You need to replace the whole side cover to get the straight up cable joint or adjustment because the covers are notched out in different locations.Side covers are usually for sale on ebay for reasonable prices.I had sold two like the style you have for about $12.00 each on ebay so you could probably sell yours after you find the other style if you wanted to recover some money.I have an extra that I am holding on to incase mine cracks or something or I would sell it to you.Maybe someone on here has one they can part with.Joe
