no 2nd gear
no 2nd gearHi everyone,

I just bought a nice somewhat restored 62 dream for $600. The only problem is I need to change the transmission. (second gear is toast.) I ordered Bill's book and wanted to see if I need any other manuals that would help me or any special tools. The motor wasn't rebuilt so I don't know if I should tear it apart too. The guy I bought it from gave me a bunch of parts with the bike since he had two of them. I'm not a beginner but I have never done this kind of job before. I'm trying to get as much information as I can before I even lift a wrench. Thanks

Matty
Re: no 2nd gearNo not yet. I just got Bill Silvers book and trying to find out if I'm going to rebuild the motor too. I'm going to read over the book a few times before I even touch the thing.

Matt
Re: no 2nd gearGreat idea. Have you removed it from the frame? If all ya want to do is fix the trans you only need to drain the oil, remove both side covers and clutch and all the nuts on the bottom and the 2 12mm nuts on top.
Put a 2x4 on the 2 top nuts (have them flush with the top of the studs) and knock the heck out of the 2x4 and the cases will split and you can get to the trans and others paert like the shift forks and shift rollers in the shift drum. These need to be as new or you'll spend a lot of time and not cure all the problems.
I use YAMAHA Bond 4 to seal the cases after I've cleaned and dried the cases. ..................

Re: no 2nd gearI just don't want to do that and all the pieces come falling out and I have no idea where they go. Yikes!!!
Re: no 2nd gearI do engine rebuilds and all the owners are very pleased with the work I do. ..........................
