Left side crankcase, oil filter, and pipe header questions

Post by paperslammer » Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:59 am

Hey all. Finally cracked open my left side crank case to paint it. I used a impact screw driver. THAT THING IS AWESOME.
I asked a while earlier if it was OK to have oil in the case. Is it OK to have this much oil? It was a lot. The gasket that goes around the case ripped a bit, so I guess I'll pick up another on of those

Is there an easy was to get this oil filter apart? When I look inside, I don't see any screens or anything to clean. Does it just filter from spinning / gravity?

When I took the muffler / head off, I found that the guy before me did this makeshift crap to fit the header in the muffler. This is not normal, correct? Is there a part I am missing?

The shifting axle looked a little worn. Does this look OK? The teeth near the thicker part of the shaft are a little warped. Worth replacing?

All the gears / tensioners looked surprisingly good.

Thanks for any help!

Pretty much all of the engine oil should drain out when you remove that cover. You must knock the cover off of the filter after removing the clip, and there will be lots of gunk in it. It is a centrifigul filter. You'll probably have to smooth out the surfaces that the shaft rides on after re-assembling, make sure it spins freely on the shaft. Shift shaft look OK, I'd run it, just make sure shft lever is tight. Some one really cobbed that exhaust for sure. The should be a collar / washer welded to the end of the pipe, and the two half moons push it against the copper sealing gasket in the head when you tighten it down. I have welded a washer to the end of the pipe to repair this, or find a good used one.

Just for clarification, the header pipe in the picture is a little misleading. The end I'm showing is the end that goes into the muffler. The head end has a collar that can be tightened against, so I think that side of it is correct.

Thanks for all the other advice!
