exhaust pipes - OEM or reproductions?
exhaust pipes - OEM or reproductions?
Can someone clear this up.. are the stock looking pipes that have the EPA notice stamped into them (see photo) "OEM" pipes from Honda (sold in the mid 80's or some time later), or are they cheap reproductions?
Here's why I'm asking.. see attached photo..
Notice that one pipe has a collar on it for holding the packing around the header and the other one doesn't. I've looked at it closely and it's not that the collar was cut off of it.. it was never put on.
It looks like I have a couple of options:
1 - Cut slots in the end of it and use a chromed clamp to squeeze the pipe around the header, like a lot of "slip on" pipes use.
2 - Find a donor pipe that has been squashed or rusted through, cut the collar from it, weld it onto this pipe, rechrome, etc..
If they're repros then I won't feel bad about doing option #1.
oh.. notice how the PO of these pipes ran with them. Judging by the black soot on that header they ran with it barking for a while too.
The chrome on the front/top looks good, but the back side of these looks pretty thin and one of them has the notice stamped in it while the other has indication that it was stamped in but mostly ground away before it was chromed.

Ya have 2 issues which tis a good chance are both HONDA production.
The one with the seal holding crimp was designed that way as the one without the crimp had a Push In seal which over time would blow out/up the header pipe. ................lm

David Silver Spares has them in the UK at 5GBP each. I am visiting the US this week, I could bring some over or I'm sure that postage to US would be reasonable.

.. . oh my. I've got two different versions. hah. My parts book only showed the pipe with the crimped end. I didn't even know about the straight ended type. Thanks for the answer!
I'm checking with David Silver and looking around to see if usual sources in the US have them. It looks like they're around $7 plus shipping, unless you buy them from the guy in Thailand and then they're $80 plus shipping. lol.

My '62 Dream has the plain muffler ends with the big rubber sleeves. I think the type with the later flanged end are later types. I have some stainless mufflers in both types. I have a couple of sets of the big sleeves in my spares box. I'l bring them to New York with me on Thursday, just in case...
