Kickstart forward or backwards?

I am new to this forum and just received a 1962 CA77 305. I am going to rebuild and paint it. I was going through what works and what doesn't on the bike. I found out that the kickstart clicks or slips when I try to start it. This may sound stupid now that I think about it, but is the kickstart supposed to go forward (clockwise) or backwards (counterclockwise) to start? If anyone has some insight for me I would apprecitate any help.<br />Thanks
