hey guys- its been a while.
i have begun top end disassembly and after removing the breather plate, i have discovered that when the cam chain master link is at the top, the bike is not at TDC. is this normal?
also, in mr honda's manual, it says: Once the top
cover and baffle plate have been removed, loosen the large camshaft
lock nut, using a hook spanner or large flat dull screwdriver (Note:
This nut has left-hand threads).
what is the baffle plate and do i need to remove this lock nut if i am only re-honing cylinders and re ringing?
thanks.

Re: CA77 cam chain
Cam chain is OK as ya only care where the link is when ya assemble the engine.
Ya can Leave the cams alone.
Ya say Breather Plate and Bill says Baffle Plate.
Actually it is that metal sort of casket between the 2 gaskets and so ya will know the 2 small holes go to the front. .............lm

CAM CHAIN
I would guess they want you to take the cam bolt off if you have an endless chain and you want to remove the chain without cutting it.Perhaps someone will back me up on that.
I'm an expert on the baffle plate. If you leave it out like I did you will get oil pouring out of the top breather tube. If you put the 2 baffle plate holes facing the rear of the engine(like I did) you will get the same result. They are oil drain holes.
SO YOU MUST PUT THE BAFFLE ON WITH THE 2 VENT HOLES FACING FORWARD!!!!!!

Re: CAM CHAIN
These engines were not issued with an endless chain.
All had the master link. ............lm

timing chain
lm,That's interesting that they didn't install endless chains from the factory. There was a post here recently about installing an endless chain when doing a rebuild. What would be the benefit of installing an endless chain if the factory didn't think it was necessary? Mike

Re: timing chain
Availability of the endless chain.
I ordered and received 20 endless chains from one of my suppliers and found when I cut one to install with a master link the hole was smaller than any link I have.
I did get my $$$ back. ............lm
