Well, I bit the bullet.
Well, I bit the bullet.Well, I bit the bullet & bought the CA72. I'll have a long, long road ahead of me to restore this thing - most of you guys wouldn't bother, I'm sure, as you have plenty of bikes to pick from. Not matter, I'll give it a go.
Mine has come from Colorado or Wisconsin fairly recently, and appears to be a very early CA72, with the rounder tank. Can aynone confirm this? It also seems to have different shaped Alloy shock mounts at rear compared to most I've seen? Comments?? http://darb.net/photos/anonymous/42_1_b.jpg http://darb.net/photos/anonymous/9b_1_b.jpg

I think the earlier shock mounts did not have an area to accomodate the addition of blinker lights. An early CA95 I just bought also has the type of shock mount.
It does appear that you tank is different also/ It does look more round and the tank rubbers are a different shape. Do you have an engine or frame number from it yet?
The shock mounts are almost identical to your CA95, Hahda, and no, they don't have provision for rear indicators (which is mildly annoying, because I will need to fit some).
I do know for certain that there were two versions of the CA72 - early & late - main differences being the tank shape - It seems I have an early one. Engine Number: CA72E-110043 Frame Number: CA72-10042 Seems pretty early to me.........? Looking for wombatAre you the person who asked me about item for CA72 on Ebay? If so I believe the early 250/305 dream engines are different. I found this out by ordering the wrong gasket set on ebay for my 305.The cylinders have a extra oil port I believe. You can see the old style gasket sets on ebay for sale for the old style 250 and 305's. I did not know there was a difference till I bought it. It may be possible to swap out, but you may have to swap it with the matching head also, but you may need to ask loudmouse or get hold of Bill silver on the yahoo 305 site.I still have the head which I took all the parts out of for my 305 and the engine case. Too bad you were not closer so I could help you out.Joe
I think you may be reffering to me ;)
If it's 'just' an oil port, why can't the hole be cut into the gasket?? Or is the barrel itself missing the port? On the same note, does anyone know, then, if the early & late pistons are different?? I should be able to re-bore my existing barrels, if I can get the parts......
The early and late pistons are different alright.
Early had 4 rings and later had 3. I recommend you use the 3 ring style. The pistons and rings are available. I have all sizes here. ........lm If it's 'just' an oil port, why can't the hole be cut into the gasket?? Or is the barrel itself missing the port? Ok, so while the pistons ARE different, the later ones are a direct swap??
LM, havn't taken the head off, so unsure as to what sizes I will need. Do you have a full range & what other parts do you supply? I'm in Australia & will need someone willing to ship to here.......... Maybe drop me an email if you don't want to list stuff here? wombat200@hotmail.com
