Speedo Issues - At a lost

Post by pwilke1 » Mon May 09, 2011 1:38 pm

Ok, so I've had issues with my speedometer not working for the past few months. While it's not a huge problem, I'd prefer to keep the miles consistent. The basic issue is that it doesn't work. Simple enough. The steps I've taken to repair are:

-Replaced the cable twice
-Took apart and restored the speedo per instructions found here

After each attempt, it would momentarily work then nothing. In additional testing by attaching a drill to the speedo cable, everything seems to be working fine. So I am now under the assumption it has to do with the wheel end of the cable. Before I break into it and open it up, are there any suggestions on what else I should look for? Suggestions on what to look for on the wheel end?

Also, since I've been on the forum for the past year - I figured it about time to post a pic of my dream.

Thanks guys!

-Patrick

speedo drive

Post by jleewebb » Mon May 09, 2011 1:56 pm

Prop bike so front wheel is off ground, remove cable from speedo drive, get your eye and light so you can see slot where cable goes into drive, spin wheel, and see if slot turns. If not, remove wheel and check that the drive is meshing properly with the hub. Not sure how this works on a Dream so I'm gonna quit advising at this point. Hope this helps. --Lee

Easy enough. Thanks for the advise. I'll give it a shot tonight.

You can also disconnect the cable at the speedo and see if it spins then use you fingers to put drag on the cable and see that it still spins.
I found on mine that I had the tabs in the front hub not in place when I installed the hub and bent them so the speedo only worked sometimes I bet you will find the problem in that part at the hub.
