1967 305 Superhawi cb72 starter bolts

Post by arseatea » Sat Nov 10, 2012 10:13 am

I hope this doesn't double post. I tried to post and it just disappeared.

I am looking for a long starter bolt for this bike. My starter is installed and does work well, but one of the longer bolts, I think the size is 5mm X 105mm is missing. I could just pull the starter and measure the remaining bolt, but I would like to pull the starter, replace the bolt, and put it back in all in the same day if possible. Does any one know exactly what size bolt I am looking for and where I might find one?

Also, I am looking for the lock washer, with the tabs, that fits the oil filter drive sprocket. I found one at David Silver Spares, but they want $3 for the washer and $18 to ship it. I am just too cheap to pay that much for shipping. Hoping I can find another, less expensive, supply.

I am a little confused about what direction the spring washer on the oil Filter drive sprocket is installed. Is it installed with the concave toward the engine?

Thanks for any information. Ron

Spring washer goes on so the outer diameter contacts the gear, inner contacts the lock washer and nut. Another more confusing way to describe it is if was a full cone, it would point toward you and away from the engine. Also, the bevel on the nut should go toward the engine. That way, the lock washer tabs don't get caught in the nut when you tighten it.

Thanks for the timely replys. I should have re-read my original post. The starter bolts I need are inside the starter and hold the thing together. They are long and thin. I seem to remember them as 5mm X 105mm, but not sure. I don't know why all the schematics I have seen for a starter don't show these bolts. The places I have tried locally have them up to 80mm but not longer.

Thanks for the info on the spring washer. Also, I did find the lock washer at Western Hills Honda. At least, it is on their website, but I haven't called them yet.

I am about to pull what little hair I have left out because the shifter drum does not want to roll. It seems to work alright if I try to shift it by hand, but the shifter link does not move the drum fully between the notches. I read about some one loosening the 17 mm kick starter stopper bolt, but that did not help. Thanks again...Ron

I'd say make sure based on the "Gear Change" page of the parts diagram that you have all the right parts related to the gear shift arm in the right places and that nothing is binding. Also, as you probably realize, it won't shift very easily without the shafts turning. Maybe post a pic if you're still stuck.

On the starter bolts, you may need to find a donor starter on ebay.
