Noticing some chain slapping sounds on the way home I went to tighten the chain again and found this.

Yikes! So looks like I won't be riding this to work tomorrow. I'm not sure how that happens, can someone tell me whether my rear sprocket looks bad? From the images I've seen elsewhere, it doesn't look too bad, but another opinion would be good, there seem to be so many varying opinions online of when it's 'worn out'.

Maybe better replace as a whole, chain and sprockets, better safe then sorry.

I go along with Jensen. Somebody along time ago told me when the sprocket teeth get pointed a change is over due. Cliff

Sprocket doesn't look all to bad, it's not new, but it's not a high HP motorcycle, you could do lot's of thousand of miles with that. If you maintain it properly (lube ofcourse)

Can't you shorten the chain ? Get a link out ?

Personally I would fix (shorten) the chain if possible, or just get a new one.

Officially, yes, you must replace the chain and sprockets at the same time.
But I wouldn't in this case.

If the front sprocket is also in the same condition, I would be fine with it.

But if possible, just shorten the chain. Or put 3 (on both sides) new links in the chain.

You also may want to inspect the chain if you plan to re-use it, but it's probably just a fabrication error.
If you have any doubts, you should ofcourse get atleast a new chain.

Hm, can I just remove a link and put a master link in? I wonder if that can be done with it still on the bike..

Do you guys know any tricks to replacing a chain without removing the kickstart cover? How bout without removing the rear wheel?

You can add another master link. however, that is the weekest point of the chain so...... If you want to replce chain only, just clip the new chain to the old chain and pull it through.
