'64 is a '63??

Post by conbs » Wed Oct 09, 2013 11:38 am

I saw a bike on ebay one time that was titled in the year prior to the date of manufacture indicated by the frame number. I wouldn't have thought much of it except that a picture of the original sales invoice was included in the listing. IIRC it was a bike with a '64 frame number that was sold in November of 1963 and was therefore titled as a 1963. I thought I had kept a copy of the pictures from the ebay listing, but I can't find them now.

It may be possible that this bike was sold the same way.

How about it, some of you guys who worked for dealers back in the day. When did the next year's bikes start showing up. Were they like cars, coming out in the fall of the previous year?

64, your paperwork may reflect the original sale of the bike.

I have a 1973 model CL175, the frame number plate says it was manufactured in 8/72, I think it safe to assume the bikes would be delivered to dealers around at least Nov/Dec maybe earlier ready for the New Year.
Related to this, I shipped the bike from the US to here in the UK where I had to register it for the road, I had to supply a certificate from an authorised club to say the bike was manufactured in 8/72 to them, all this was done and eventually received 'Registration Documents' which stated in the relevant boxes;
First Registered - 1/72
Manufactured - 8/72
Bureaucracy where would we be without it.

1973 CL175
1976 XL175 - Sold
1964 CL72

Hey combs, I'm not sure about the sixties, but in the 70's, a bike was called a 70 if it was
produced from 1-6 month of 70. It was a 71 if poduced 7-12 month of 70.

The next year.

kirbb9,

Thanks for that info.

For the 60-64 Dreams there had to be a point in time where Honda changed over to the next year's frame and engine numbers as they are distinct for each year. Are you saying that, if it was done the same way as in the 70's, it would have happened in June of the previous year?

Anybody else have different or confirming info for the 60's?

Don't know about then, but now many vehicles are produced in the year prior to the model year.

You can buy a 2014 model now.

Different models of the same make are produced and "released" at different times in advance of the model year.

It would be entirely possible for the model year, actual production year, and title year to all be different as some states titled the bike as year sold back then.

Now, the vin# dictates.
