Motor "cap" removal on bike?

Post by hotrodhendrix » Sat Apr 25, 2015 10:46 am

So got the old gal started! Come to find I didn't put the cap gasket on haha. Smoke and oil. Anyways I was wonder if anyone has just swung the front of the motor down to do something like this? It is the very top part of the motor with 8 bolts you tighten from the top but can only get to 4 on the bike. Looks possible but wanted to post and ask before I try.

Thanks
James

Well answer is yes haha. Wasn't too bad swung it down and tossed the gaskets on. But still smoking really bad what seems to be the vent nipple at the top of the head?

I managed to make it idle for a min or so last night and was smoking pretty good. Now today can't keep it running and still white smoke. Seems to come from head top crankcase vent but can't really tell. Any ideas that don't end in head gasket and rebuild? Haha

James

What has been done to the engine. Did you rebuild it? Compression test? When we have some details we can offer some thoughts.

I may have to change my ignition advance springs at the camshaft. I have a question for you hotrodhendrix. With the engine swung down, could you access the cam sprocket and easily get to the springs for the ignition advance unit?

Oh yeah plenty of room to do just about anything. I just had it rested on a jack and removed all mounting bolts besides the bottom two. Just disconnected carb, removed right side cover, gave plenty of slack in the drive chain, removed exhaust, then of course spark plug wires etc.

As for what was going on with the motor is: picked it up from a guy stating it was previously running before taking apart bike. Then when I was having issues with a sticky clutch (turned out not to be) a mechanic said he got it running and did a compression check. (145 each side). Thought all was good but ran a compression check myself yesterday and found 125 left and 90 right. So yanked it out and its gonna get a rebuild hopefully by a local shop if they don't ask too much. If not I will give it a go. I have rebuilt tons of (late) model car engines but this is a very different ball game haha.

Really I should have pressure tested it myself instead of assuming the mechanic wasnt full of it. Said it ran for him with very little smoke and no oil.. When I get it back I find coil wired backwards, no gasket on the cap (my bad lol) tossing oil when started, tons of smoke, etc etc. He basically charged me $200 to figure out my drive chain guards bolts were too long and binding the drive chain. As a bonus he chipped my paint in multiple places and left a nice dent in a side cover.

One piece of advice about swinging the engine down, make sure to at least loosen all bolts connecting it to the lower frame otherwise you'll do what I did and try tilting it down and break an engine mount on the engine. Thankfully, I had a good welding friend to put it back on.

Hamamatsu, I put a new cam chain in with it tilted down, it's easy to just turn the front end to one side and you can get to everything in there easy as pie.
