Post by Robbie63 » Mon May 02, 2016 8:23 pm

I have put a few miles on my 305 these days and figured it's time to do the timing chain and maybe set the valves.i don't have a manual yet so any help on setting the cam chain tensioner would be appreciated.thanks rob

Remove the alternator cover to expose the timing marks and roll the engine around until the pointer is on the "T" mark(top dead center). Unscrew the tappet covers and adjust whichever pair of intake/exhaust rockers are loose(on the firing stroke) to .004"or .1 mm. Roll the engine over one turn to TDC again and adjust the rockers on the opposite cylinder. With the engine still on TDC, loosen the lock nut/bolt on the cam chain adjuster on rear of the cylinder. The spring inside the adjuster will take up any slack, re-tighten the bolt and nut. You don't need to over-tighten the bolt, 5-6 foot-pounds of torque will be plenty.

This is what HONDA says to do to adjust the cam chain.
Does not agree with Top Dead Center statement. ..............lm

Per HONDA Service-Repair-Handbook, 250-305cc Twins- All Years.
Page 37, Fig. 17.
11. Replace and attach the cam chain tensioner. Refer to Figure 17 and loosen the tensioner adjustment bolt. Rotate the crankshaft until the generator rotor "T" mark is 180 degrees from the stater indicator mark and tighten the tensioner adjusting bolt. This automatically tightens the cam chain to proper tension.
