Engine oil again

Post by casamere » Tue Sep 13, 2016 12:49 pm

I appreciate this thread must have been done to death but after spending a lot of $$$$ on my restored CA78 I don't want to damage it by using the wrong oil. Why when it has SAE30 stamped on the gearbox casing do I read it is only suitable for mower engines. I have some Multigrade 10/40 standing by to put in after your recommendations. Thanks.

Steve

The engine was designed in the 1950's and 30W oil was the recommendation. Your choice is to continue with that recommendation or go with something that Honda recommends for modern engines of a similar design. The CG125 has a similar type roller big end and multiplate clutch so that's a possiblity.

Whatever you use, make sure you change it often and keep both filters clean.

G

This is the recommendation in the owner's manual for the CB72

Thanks G-Man, I have gone with the multigrade 10/40 but will consider giving this a try sometime.

I use Silkolene 40 in my G3 Matchless, but have always used multigrade in my Hondas. To each his own......
