Fender Guard Rubs The Left Header - Solved

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Sun Apr 07, 2019 2:05 pm

Can the fender guard be adjusted lower...? My fender guard rubs the left header when I try to turn right, to the point it "sticks" when trying to turn right. It doesn't do it when it's on the stand, but instead misses it by literally a hair's breadth. It does not do this when I turn Left, either on the stand or off.

Take it Off the stand, and it rubs turning to the right, even without me on it...any ideas?

By the fender guard, do you mean the chrome loop that runs behind the fender and is near the exhaust? The fender is fixed so there is no adjustment for that. The chrome loop that runs outside the fender is part of the suspension and moves with the wheel, if this is touching the exhaust then either the forks are bent backwards or you have some strange exhaust headers fitted.

bent forks or bent steering stem (frame). there should be 1'-1.5" clearance there. been there done that. if the frame is bent it is bent and no amount of hoping s going to fix it.
Good luck

Geoff, you may be spot-on...I *hope.

The exhaust I have on there now is a traditional Dream exhaust - looks like a big aluminum cigar - you know, the usual type. That is not the one it came with, it originally came to me with a different type that looks like it's got a long can in the middle of where the muffler should be - that's the best I can describe it; I'll try to post a pic a bit later (I'm at work right now...shhhh...) but I traded out the exhaust/headers& mufflers with a parts bike I have, so maybe if I switch them back the problem will solve itself; maybe.

Along those lines, what does the exhaust pipe collar do (those two shims in the head the pipe appears to rest on)? ....is it just to provide a base for the headers?

The two collars around the headers push the headers onto the sealing washers in the port. Might be worth looking in the port to check if more than one copper sealing washer has be fitted This might allow the headers to wrongly locate. I'd remove the silencers and nip up the headers and see if that's what's caused the problem.

So those collars go Around the headers...?? The diagram shows the collars going into the exhaust hole first, followed by a gasket, then the headers themselves....

It's not the copper crush gasket First, then the spacers, THEN the headers...?

Got a Pic of how they should go...??
