Difficult Shifter

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Sun Jul 21, 2019 11:28 am

Okay, well, I discovered a possible new problem with my CA77; it has a hard time finding the gears.

Just to be clear, is the 1966 CA77 a 4-speed, or 5? I always thought it was a 5-speed, but I may be wrong - probably am.

But when I'm standing still and trying to go through the gears, it sticks ( I believe) in 2nd. I can find 3rd after some effort, and what I believe is 4th, but can go no higher. It also drops into Neutral Really easily. It also has a heel shifter, which is taking some time getting used to...

And, after all this time - 39 years, I believe - it was the first time yesterday I took her up the road and back, but couldn't seem to get it out of Second.

So here's my question: is it something internal (I hope not) or merely a matter of adjusting the clutch? The clutch FEELS like it's good - but I've also noticed adjusting things on these bikes tend to be tighter than usual. So before I go tearing things apart I would Really like a second opinion.
