305 Dream Starter

Post by Gene1000 » Wed Oct 22, 2025 3:13 pm

Hello all,
I have a 1965 Honda 305 Dream that I’m restoring and trying to get started. It’s not run for many years. When I press the start button, the solenoid clicks but the starter itself does not turn over. I finally got the lights to work.
Is there a way that I can test the starter while it is still on the bike? I would rather not go through the hassle of removing it.

Thank you for the help.

G'day Gene1000

Good luck with your restoration.

Have you tried jumper leads? Make sure the bike is in neutral and your spare battery is fully charged - avoid using the bike battery as it may be the problem. Using the black (negative) jumper lead, connect the negative terminal of the battery to a good, clean earth point on the bike frame or motor. Avoid rusty, dirty or painted areas.

Connect the red (positive) jumper lead to the positive terminal of the battery. Then touch the other end of the red jumper lead on to the starter motor terminal and remove it quickly. It should spin the starter.

If the spare battery is good and the starter does no spin, check you have a good earth connection on the bike.

If the starter motor spins, then it is likely your bike's battery is failing under load.

Good luck.
