loud clanking noise in 1st gear, is my trans broken?

i have a '68 CB77 SUperhawk. It's been sitting 25 years. Yesterday i cleaned the expterior of the motor and after that the bike didn't run right. I was shifted it into 1st gear and from a stop the bike shuddered and clanked loudly and stalled. I assumed I was in the wrong gear. it sputtered just like it would if you tried take off in 3rd gear. When it stalled i made sure it was in 1st gear but it was kinda tough to get it into first gear for some reason. the shifter didn't want to move easily. so when i started it i had to "ride the clutch" to get it to move...still seemd like it was in 2nd or third gear as it shook and clanked kinda loudly. Is my tranny finished or does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this? Many thanks in advance

I've been reading countless posts and I wonder if there's anyway it's a short in the starter since I did wash the bike?

or maybe the kick starter mechanism is partially engaaged? The bike ran and shifted perfeclty the day before that's why this is so odd.

Sounds like you got some water in the points or other electrical, and it's only running on one cylinder. Make be other issues as well. The arm that goes on the splines for the shift shaft should ne at 11:00 or shifting will be affected.

that sounds like the best outcome possible. I hope you're right. will the points dry on their own or shoudl i open up the case and dry it by hand?

Open it up, and clean / dry them. They rust super quickly, so you may need to dress and reset them with Ed's tune up recipie.

well i opened up the cover with teh ignition timing and it seems to be arching awkwardly. I can see the points on the right hand side making sparks every once in a while. The bike runs smooth and sounds nice in neutral. It fires on both cylinders and doens't seem to be any issues there. Now when i take off in 1st gear the bike sounds normal until I let the clutch out 100% and then it clanks and wants to stall. Could it sitll be a timing issue? Could water have gotten somehwere else that making this bike buck and shake and wanna stall?? Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited as I'm kinda stuck here. Thanks in advance.

ps-I'm gonna post this in the eletrical/timing forum too jsut in case it's not a trans issue like has been suggested.

Points are clean and dry. Ran some 1500 grit sandpaper thorugh the points to be sure there was no rust. Still having the same clunking and stalling issues. It really feels like it's in 2nd or even 3rd gear even though it's in 1st with the shifter shaft at 11 o'clock position too. Is it even possible for the trans to be stuck in another gear with the shaft that goes on the splines at 11 o'clock? I'm kinda stuck here.
