Starter Problem with something other than the starter

Post by bolokid » Fri May 05, 2006 9:32 am

I was just wondering if somebody could tell me if there is a usual problem that happens with the dream electric starter systems. My 69 Dream 305 turns over once and then the starter free spins. In my ignorance I took the starter off and took it to the starter & alternator shop here in Des Moines and had it tested. It was fine and so the problem must be on the other end of the chain. How do you get to the sprocket on the other end of this chain.
Thanks,
Bob

There is probably a problem with the starter clutch. There are 3 spring and roller mechanisms that can become stuck. To fix this you have to pull the engine side cover, pull the rotor and stator, then you can get to the problem.

Kevin - Thanks for the info. I have tried to get the side cover off and I can't figure out how to get the kick starter attachment point off so that I can get the cover off. I take the actual kick starter off but then the point were it attaches is the problem. Also, if I do manage to get it off what parts do I need to try and locate?
Thanks,
Bob

You should be able to pull the cover right off. The kickstart shaft is splined, nothing nolding it on.

You might not need any parts but if you are that far into it you might want to replace a few of the engine seals as preventative maintainence. A set for the engine can be had fo $35 from Nick at ohiocycle.com.

As far as the rollers I just polished the corrosion off them and lubed them up. I don't know if they were failing as I never tried starting this engine but they did have some light corrosion on them that may have caused problems in the future.

Actually now that I get to thinking about it more you might not have to pull that cover at all. Just take off the round cover that has 3 screws. With that off you can pull the rotor by threading in the rear axle. The spings and rollers are in the rotor.

To reassemble you need to line up the key in the shaft with the rotor and then you need to turn the starter sprocket that the rotor goes over slightly to get the rollers to retract slightly so it slides over. Don't just tap or use the bolt to try and force it into place. You will wreck the rollers.

Hope this helps.
