Late fork disassembly?

Post by Jethro » Sat Oct 22, 2011 5:48 pm

So I know that this has been gone over but cant come up with much on the search.
So I have one of the forks all ready to come apart. I have it down to bare bones, spring is out fluid drained etc. I removed the snap ring on top of the seal, removed the allen bolt on the bottom of the fork. I thought that after removing these two items, it would just pull apart. I've tried to slide hammer them apart to get the inner peices out of the alloy bottom. Any tips? Also I know the late seals are next to impossible to find but has anyone found any source recently? (33 43 9, correct?)

Thanks, Jethro.

I just made an attempt to disassemble the other fork now and made it as far as I did with the first. Only this one is seized. The inner piece wont slide at all. Won't budge a bit. This is my first fork experience so any advise would be awesome.

Jethro

I've not dismantled one of these legs but a little heat might help at the top around the seal. On the seized one, try filling it with diesel or penetrating oil. Do either of the legs look damaged? If the slider is distorted it may be binding on the fork bushes.

I had problems with early steel lower where POs had used fender mounting screws which were too long and pushed a pip into the bore of the slider. On one I managed to drill through the fender mounting hole with a flat-bottomed drill and on the other I managed to get the dremel in to grind off the pip.

I have one NOS fork leg for one of these, complete with spring, top nut and chrome cover.

Thanks G-man
They both look to be in rather decent shape except for some scratches in the paint. The screws and bolts were the same on both forks and appeared to be original hardware. The drain screws were really short with the copper sealing washer on each one. Thanks for the advise to use some heat too.

I sent you an e-mail last week about those early CA knee grips. Let me know if you still need some help with them.

Thanks again
Jethro
