Almost there!

Post by KellieLyyne » Thu Nov 17, 2011 1:45 am

Well, she is almost ready to ride! Too bad its getting ready to rain! We got my 63 dream running today, it still needs timing, and other little tweeks to get it just right. However, I was wondering if any knew why it would start when it was kick started, but when I use the electric starter, it turns over but doesn't start the motor. When I get the timing and other little bugs worked out will that fix it? Or is there something else I should be looking for? Here's a picture of it, we still have to put on the side covers, and finish adjusting the brakes.... but its getting really close.

Wish I could answer your questions (but I can't!) It looks gorgeous!!! I'm SO jealous!! I bet you can't wait to take it for a ride. You did such a nice job - (high five to your hubby!) It gives me inspiration to get mine looking that good. Can't wait to hear how the first ride goes!

Sometimes, the electric starter might not be perfect and draw more current that normal, as well as the battery not being totally up to snuff. Those 2 together can pull voltage down enough that you get only a weak spark. Kicking gives full power back to the coils for a stronger spark.

That will happen to mine when the battery starts to go. It looks as though you have a new battery so maybe your starter is drawing more than it should. Check that along with all your connections throughout the harness.

BTW, where did you get those WW tires? I've not seen that style before.

Thanks everyone! It turned out so much better than I even imagined! About those WW tires. They are regular black Kendas, with the portawalls added. The Kendas have nice breaking point from the tread to side wall to hide any "lip" of the portawall. I had to trim the portawall a tad to make it fit just right. But they look great. Thanks for the feedback on the starter/battery issue. The battery is new, but maybe it is drawing too much amperage. I will check on that.

Kigsby, you know what I did? I found a picture of a bike that I LOVED, and I printed one out and put it somewhere where I could see it a lot of the time, and then, I put that same picture on my desktop so I could see it everyday. Believe it or not, it helped with inspiration. Matter a fact, that was what I titled it on my desktop. You will get there, but remember, it took me/hubby 2 and half years! I will post a pic when I get it on the road!

That's SO funny you said that! At work, I have a picture of my "Dream" bike (white one-looks kinda like yours!) as my screensaver and a picture of my actual "Before" bike on my wall. I'm just starting to clean it up and I sneak into the garage every chance I get to shine something! I spent an hour last night trying to pull that darn kickstart knuckle off. It just won't come out and I can't change the clutch cable until I can get it off. I'm off work all next week so I can ride and clean her for a little while before I have to start taking her apart (I'm scared to death to start!) I'm afraid I'll never get it back together and working!

Do you have Bill Silvers books? He has a resto book, and engine repair book and a parts book that shows how it all goes back together. Like I've said before, use your digit camera and take lots of pictures BEFORE you take it apart. It will help. Also, Kigsby, what are you hoping to accomplish? Are you doing a FULL resto? Because I have heard time and again, that many people take ONE project at a time. Like, Work on a front Fender, but don't take the WHOLE bike apart. Work in stages. That way the bike isn't in a million pieces. I had my doubts that my bike would EVER get put back together. I have to say, that even though my bike looks almost new, Im afraid to ride it because I don't want to put that first scratch in it. Because this is the best it's ever going to look. Oh and Kigsby, was this the picture you used? LOL because it's the one I used.

I'm using that picture as a model for my bike also. It's posted on the wall of my shop. I just completed painting the bike white and I've begun assembly. When I get some time I'll post some pictures of the process. This site has been very helpful.
