CL77 Dies on Idle

Post by AdamKosecki » Sun May 28, 2006 7:15 pm

I would first like to say "hello" to everyone and thank you in advance for the answers to what will most likely be my barrage of questions. Additionally, I posted this on a different forum that some of you may belong to. If so, I applogize for the repeat. This place seems more suitable for my bike.

I just got my first bike, a '66 Honda CL77.

Look at her.. so hot! Anyway, I am having a problem with it: It dies on idle if I do not open up / feather the throttle slightly. Other than that it runs great. This is my first bike, and I am ordering this book on it, but I was hoping y'all might be able to give me a few suggestions on what might be the problem. I'm mechanically inclined, but I've never worked on a bike before - only cars.

Thank you!
Adam

EDIT - I should mention that I noticed that if I park it and leave the fuel petock open the right carb will leak fuel. I don't think it is leaking at all if I only have it open when it's running. AND it usually starts on the first kick, but if I screw up an bunch and have to kick it around 8 or more times fuel kinda leaks out of the fuel cap and runs down the side of the tank. Which sucks to wipe up with your bare hands.

Adam, Your cl looks very nice! Congrats on having such good taste. Your problem is carbs that need to be rebuilt or at least taken apart and cleaned very well. Also some attention needs to be given to the float settings. It sounds like the one that leaks has a float valve or float that is stuck, dirty, or just screwed up.The no idle can be from too much fuel from that carb or the air bleed (idle system) is plugged up. You should get a manual specific to this bike, it will be helpfull in walking you thru the repair process. Good Luck and let us all know how its going. Steve Greer

That's exactly what I'm doing. I did a lot of reading and concluded that I'm running too rich. I took my carbs off yesterday, I'm cleaning them tomorrow morning. I can't wait!

I got that book by Ron Silver (well, I can't remember his first name) as well.

This is my first bike. I've loved working on cars all my life, it's exciting to be attacking a new animal.
