Installation of Rotor... keyway question...

So how do the pros position the keyway on the crank when they want to reinstall the rotor? Outermost edge of the keyway flush with the crank? Just slightly above the crank? The reason I ask is because I beat the crap out of a keyway today when I put things back together after a crank seal replacement and I'd like to avoid that next time (knock wood) I have to tackle the same tasks.
