CL77 high speed carburetor trouble

Post by tlsholin » Wed Jun 28, 2006 5:29 pm

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and first time post. I recently finished restoring a '67 CL77 and the carbs are giving me fits. It runs fine at slow and mid range but dogs when wide open. When I run it wide open and close the choke slightly it cleans up and revs right to red line. That indicates that it is running lean. Should I try to upsize the main jets? They are currently 130's which according to everything I have read should be about right. Is there anything else I should check that I could be missing? Thanks for the help.

tlsholin, Welcome to the 305 forum! As you read thru the forum you will notice alot of problems with carbs. but don't worry there are some good guys here to help. My first thought is have you checked your float level? Second is: where is your main needle set at (how many notches from the middle?) A 130 main jet is the right thing to have in your bike so no worry there,no change needed. Is the exhaust stock? a change there can cause some problems. That is about all I got, hope some others have some thoughts on this and will "jump" in. Good Luck! Steve(kustommusic) Greer

Steve, thanks for the quick reply. The needle is set in the 3rd position from the bottom. Do you know where the float measurement should be taken from? There is a notch on the side of the carburetor body next to the float and if you measure form there it is right on, if you measure from the higher lip it is 25 mm. Thanks

tl, If the clip is in the middle I would try moving it down one notch. Toward the point of the needle. Measure the float level from the gasket surface to the top of the float with the carb. inverted. Try 26mm. Perty sure this is right but if you have a manual go by their set up or, better yet locate Ed Moore's way to set up the whole thing(points and timing too). Find that by going to the VJMC link and search there,I don't remember the exact way to get there. Good Luck! Steve greer

Thanks for the tip on the needle, raised it one notch and eliminated all flat spots, the other problem was caused by the float crossbar being slightly bent, one float was higher than the other, Replaced it with a good one from my spare parts box and all is well. Thanks for the help.
