Points cam shaft

Post by sprocket » Mon May 28, 2012 2:19 pm

Hello,
Can someone tell me the purpose of the large " flange" on this shaft, and what could happen if it was not there?
Thanks,
Karl

My guess is it is to dampen/assist the advance/retard cycle as it rotates. ??????????????????lm

My assumption was that it's there to wick away oil. Isn't it a scroll type oil seal?

I thought the question was about the sort of large diameter (7/8 inch) sort of wheel at the points end of the shaft. ?????????????????????. ....lm

If it where a damper why does it have the coarse thread around the edge? I came to both conclusions myself but wanted to check if anyone knew for sure . I am certain that Honda didn"t put it there for fun ! I appreciate the input and thanks.

As so many parts on the HONDA bikes can be unique and more times than not like this one isn't any data to inform the public.
The very early issue was different to what is considered common now. ???????????????. ........lm

Just been looking at that part today. The lard diameter part probably serves both functions.

a) provide a little inertia to the shaft to soak up some of the torsional vibration in the cam drive. The points themselves will add a bit of friction to dampen the vibes as well.

and b) to sling off the oil film that lubricates the shaft. The thread is there to drive the oil back away from the points area.

Honda must have had some problems initially with oil pooling in that area and overwhelming the seal and or gasket. The slinger part on my 1960 Dream motor (the one with the big cam drive sprocket) is a slightly different shape, with a taper toward the points end.
