Starter chain
Starter chain
Hello, I have a 65 ca77 305. My problem is when the engine is cold and I hit the electric start there is a horrible clanking noise coming from inside the crankcase. So I took the right Side starter cover off and noticed that the chain was way loose. And hitting the bottom of the casing. As everybody well knows this is and endless chain. And I looked at the manual and there is no tensioner. Took the stator cover off and I can see the chain way back there. So heres the question. How do I remove the dynamo? Do I have to? And is this the only way to replace or tighten the chain? Thanks everybody.

Del Sol,
You may want to spend some time using the search function on this site. It is not the greatest, but you will find a lot of valuable info just from reading whatever comes up. Try using the "post" icon lower left and use different words/combinations. I am pretty sure there have been posts on your topic.
Many quircks on these old bikes. If you are going to own one, better get to learning.
Good idea to add your location to your profile as well.

Re: Starter chain
It ain't the chain. It's the starter clutch. My chain is just as loose and works perfectly. You have to remove the rotor and probably replace the starter clutch springs and cups (which are still available from HONDA).
While you are in there you might as well replace at least the starter sprocket oil seal, maybe even the crank seal.
