CA77 petcock leaking help!!!! : (

Post by e.mcconnell » Fri Aug 11, 2006 11:31 am

I have a 66 CA77 and the original petcock leaked very badly so I got the re-build kit and installed it and it still leaks very badly. It looks to be installed corectly but the leaver still seems loose. Can anyone here help me out with this?

Any help would be geratly appreciated...

Thank You

Mine leaked at first also after I installed the rebuild kit. What I did was take it apart and slightly bend the tangs on the metal retainer that goes over the rubber. The bending will put more pressure on it and hopefully prevent leaks. Also tighten those screws that hold the petcock on pretty tight. Mine leaked from around the screws until I really torqued them down.

someone also told me to soak the petcock in a can of gas overnight so the rubber parts would swell, does that sound right?

Think about it, now. It was made to resist being affected by gasoline. After all, that's what it's job is to regulate! If you want to soften the rubber, try dipping it in a little ATF. I don't know if overnight is such a good idea, though. Might be too much.
Another problem is the mating surface on the backside of the lever tends to get a little pitted over time. I usually end up sanding them smooth and polishing them up to near mirror finish. A combination of that and the ATF usually fixes it for me. You should also clean and inspect the recess that the valve gasket sits in. If you have pitting due to corrosion there, it's a whole other can of worms. There is no practical way to fix that, but at least it only usually leaks internally, and if your float valves are good, you'll never know.

Also, the spring washer is between the lever and the retaining ring, right?
(common newbie error, don't be ashamed!)

my petcock on my CA77 was leaking really bad... so i bent the 4 little prongs up to condense the rubber stoppers more. then i realized if you bend them up too much, they push the stoppers down so much it lets gas threw.
