Dented tank

Post by linmictil2 » Tue Feb 05, 2013 5:51 pm

Evening Gents: Picked up a tank for a CL77. Looks to have been in multiple crashes. I would like to split the tank for repairs. Question is what all does this entail? Will a Dremel work ? How do I cut the weld to separate
I do silver soldering and brazing and could have it TIG welded if need be to get it back together.
Thanks Mike

G'day linmictil2

Not sure I can answer your question, but just in case you don't know, be very, very careful working with fuel tanks - even very old ones.

Lots of people will be able to tell you how successfully they have worked on fuel tanks without any real precautions, but there are a lot of dead people who wish they had taken the necessary steps to prevent explosions.

Be very, very careful working on fuel tanks.

Good luck.
Thanks.

Regards

Will it with water, then cut/dremel it.

Have you thought of going to Harbor Freight and buy a stud gun and using a slide hammer to remove the dents. Cutting the tank, working the metal, and then re-welding sounds a bit drastic, and as said before, extremely dangerous. gas gets impregnated into the metal and can explode no matter how long it has been standing empty....Please give some careful thought to what you are about to do and look at all the alternitaves before you split the tank. Another thought, is to take it to a welder, have them cut it apart, you work the metal and then return to the welder to put it back together. Might save you and your family some serious heartach. Just MHO.
