Bike won't stay running

Post by jsmith1107 » Fri Sep 06, 2013 2:24 pm

ok guys, I have my restoration on the restoration files but this is a separate carburetor issue so I thought I would post it here. A little background---bike was taken apart fully, valves taken care of, new rings, and cylinders honed. I also put in new carb kits and quite honestly that might be the issue but let me ask you. I worked with Ed and finally have the timing set up as it has spark and when I finally got it started it runs for maybe 5 to 10 seconds and then shuts off. I choke it to start and try and wait for it to warm but it won't run long enough for that to happen. I tried giving it gas after running but it dies right away. I am thinking it is a carb issue because to me it can't be getting enough gas because it chokes out once the cylinders run out of gas.

Remedies anyone?

Definitely sounds like a fuel problem.

Maybe water or "stuff" in the tank - it settles to the bottom. Pull a fuel line and drain a bit onto a glass jar -

Obstruction between the tank and carb - pull a fuel line from the carb and see what kind of flow you are getting.

or remove the drain screws and see what happens.

Cadman, thanks for the response. I forgot to mention that I don't even have the tank on at this point---I am using a bottle as my IV so not going thru petcocks just straight into carbs and then to cylinders.

Are the carb slides in the correct way round? cut out to air filter side.

yes, they are put in the correct way as well. Could it be a float bowl thing whereas it is not set properly and not enough gas in there?

Hello 305 land. Have been way too busy at the shop to post in quite some time, but couldn't resist dropping by this morning!!!!

What jets and needles did you put in your carbs? OEM. or aftermarket?

Thoroughly clean all passage ways, compressed air blown through?

As another poster suggested, slide in correct side, cutouts facing air filters?

Slides are in correct, cut out facing air filters.

I put in aftermarket carb kits---wondering if I should just go back to the original. I mean, seriously, what really even goes wrong with them?

Everything is blown out completely.

Could it be the setting of the main needle? I have it on the 2nd spot. The bowl float setting?
