Need new carbs?

Post by zads » Tue Jun 10, 2014 10:47 pm

I took apart my carbs to begin cleaning them and found a very troubling problem. There was a build up of this brownish gunk on the outside of the bowl and a thin layer of something else on the inside (see pictures). I began getting rid of it and then realized it was covering up pin sized holes.

Also the needle holders are chipped.

I'm thinking I should start looking for new carbs, or is there anyway of salvaging them?

Thanks,
Aaron

Is there a good place that anyone knows to search for carb housing? I see the rebuild kits everywhere, but not the housing.

Thanks

I think your carb looks worse than it really is. The jet towers with the chip on them are still likely ok. The tower that holds the pilot jet is not really a problem as the jet sits low in the tower. if you can thread the pilot jet securely you are ok with that one. The main jet tower is more of a problem, so carefully thread the main jet holder until it seats as best as you see fit. The holder's threads may just seal off the chipped area enough for a proper seal. Perhaps use a thread sealant here. Not a thread locker but a removable sealer. Permatex makes one, but check to see if it is compatible with gasoline. Inspect the entire towers with a magnifying glass to make sure there is no other corrosion damage.
Your carb bowl has holes and has been previously repaired, so take the time and remove all remains of the patch material. Be careful here and try not to enlarge/create any more of the damage. You won't know how bad the metal is until you clean everything. Alternatively you may only have to find a replacement bowl. Is this problem for one carb only?
Work on cleaning the bowl and post another pic when you are done. Then we can make a recommendation for a repair, or pronouncement.

You can get them on E Bay for $100.00 a pair. Ton of time to try and fix what you got and they will still look like junk. IMO

Here are a few photos of the bowls after I have cleaned them up. Pretty bad.
