Air filter question...

Post by R100 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 4:59 pm

My sad little CB77 came with no air filters, no air tubes, and without the 4 brackets that attach the filters to the frame.
I have had no luck finding those 4 brackets, even on E-Bay.

Has anyone here tried pod filters (such as K&N) with re-jetted carbs? (Bigger mains, possibly bigger slow jets, raised needle, etc.)

No one?
Really?

Or is what I am suggesting some sort of heresy?

If you keep looking for the brackets you will find them on ebay or similar. Try posting in the classifieds here also. The tubes and air filters are available repop. I have not personally run pods or K&N but others have if you do some snooping you can find some opinions and more info on it right here.

If your not a stickler for originality make them brackets. Wouldn't take much. At least til you get originals.

you can run pods if you want. UNI red foam filters (name brand, not generic ones) are the best non-stock option. You can either purchase 42mm (i believe?) and mount them on the ends of some aftermarket air box tubes, or get 38mm and mount them directly to the carbs. If you go this route, you'll want to get the kind that angle 15 degrees and rotate them so they clear the tank and petcock.

Or you could make your own air box tubes out of radiator hose and split the difference.

Personally, I think putting pods or UNI's on the ends of the black air filter tubes looks silly, unless you're running the side covers, then no one sees it. But if you're ditching the air box all together, they tend to look like a penis.

Thank you folks.
If I go this route I will try the UNI 38mm 15 degree 4 inch.
