Now that my cl77 is up and running, my original intention for this bike was to use it for it's original design. Dual purpose riding. However after one side trip down a rough power line road I find myself pondering one troublesom question. HTF did I do this 35 years ago? It's obviously been a while since I rode trail but I now can not imagine trying to guide this old bike down a motorcycle trail much less a powerline road. Sooooooooooo, out to the road I go and will stay there.

This bike came to me with a 15-41 combo and way too short legged even for the country roads around here. I found a 16T sprocket In my box of goodies which helps but I still find myself reaching for that phantom 5th gear.
I've read mountainman's post indicating that a 16-35 combo makes an interesting combo but I sure would like some input on the best combo for my style ride on country roads and not much highway without compromizing power. I just can not see me touring much on a 42 year old motorcycle. BTW--- now you know I'm older and slower but not dead. Stepping out of the box, RW

I found I was able to run a 17, by grinding each tooth, so it will clear.

superchicken,
I assume that would be with the otherwise stock 37 tooth main? If I'm not mistaken the ratio front to rear would be close to 2 1/2 teeth drop main to one more front. That would put me at about the same ratio as the 16-35 mountainman wrote about. How does this combo perform? Anyone??????

I recently swapped out my 15-37 on my cl77 with a 15-34. I am happy with the change. Dropped the rpm's some and not much loss in power.

Aron. I checked the splines on this one and I do have the deep. My parts motor did have a 16T sprocket in very good shape which I am now using. I will try to find a 35T rear and try the combo that crxmountainman wrote about. According to my estimation, that would put me in the same place as the 15-34 ratio. Thank you for your help, RW

That should work out fine. That would probably bring down the rpms a little bit more, but pretty close to 15-34.
