gears

Post by rustywrench » Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:57 pm

I'm at a cross roads with this trans. I've replaced a few parts in this thing including the brass bushing. All parts are tight and all dogs give me full engagement except third gear. Here I only get about 50% engagement. I'm told that I can get more by using an offset cotter. I tried to buy two on ebay and that turned out to be an exercise in futility resulting in lost time and money.

Question: Do I really need more contact or is what I have sufficient? I could really use the expert opinion about now. RW

I'd say ya have to much of the 14mm brass bushing showing.
The shaft for the slider gears looks to not be positioned toward the first gear enough. ..........lm

LM,
Even with the old worn bushing, the shaft was in this position. I could push the slider over with my finger and get more engagement. Even then ,that raised the question; how do I get this slider over to achieve more dog contact or do I need to. RW

If the shaft is not positioned correctly the fixed gear will be out of position.

This is what lead me to this in the first place. If I could move the gear shaft to the right with my finger to get more dog, so how do I keep it there in that possition? Off set cotters? RW

Check the parts that hold the parts at the sides of the case with the location pins. ............lm
