11.4 volts !

Post by abert51 » Thu May 22, 2014 3:38 pm

now that the CL is running on the road (finally) I may have an alternator issue to sort out. Testing at the battery bike off = 12 volts but with bike running it is only 11.3 t 11.4 volts. I am not sure about the cloth wraped wire (red covering with white wire in it?) running from the harness to the ignition switch. I got it wired to the ignition switch lug that is red and white. The test light does not light up with the key in the on or off position when I check for voltage at this (the red and white) terminal. The wiring diagram shows a wire running directly from the rectifier to the ignition ket switch. hope I got the wiring right but can anyone clarify whats to be done to sort this out. Much appreciation. I'm running but discharging....Bullocks! Thank you all.

The diagram I looked at shows a red/white wire going from the rectifier to the switch terminal marked ch (charge?), then to the battery. A separate fused wire(red) goes from the battery post to the switch terminal marked bat. Logically, the red/white wire would just go to the battery post from the rectifier terminal. The ignition/light circuits are powered by the red wire, there is no reason for the red/white wire to even be attached to the switch. Perhaps the red/white post on the switch is just a convenient way to tidy up the wiring harness.
