Air Filter Refurbish

Post by davesdreamin » Tue Jan 29, 2013 10:54 pm

What's the consensus from the forum on dirt bike foam vs. filter paper? I'm going to replace my air filter as opposed to paying $35-60 for a replica.

I see a few people have done this. I'm curious about how long the "glue" held up? Which glue would be best? Also, which medium is easier to clean, foam or paper?

[EDIT] How much would I have to tweak my carb to offset the new mixture when using a foam instead of filter paper?

Thanks,
Dave

Unlikely there will be any significant air flow difference between foam and paper filter. Actually paper filters are quite efficient and effective at filtering. Foam is popular on dirt bikes because they are frequently in need of cleaning not because of increased air flow.

I concur that on a Dream you are not likely to see any change.

previous owner of my dream replaced the paper with foam using hot glue. When I took it off the glue had not completely sealed around the foam or had come loose.

Foam is not that hard to clean when it can be remove from the frame, but I can't see how it can be cleaned properly when permanently attached. I went back to paper.
