305 keeps missing

Post by JonnyT » Fri Sep 19, 2014 6:05 pm

Ok,I've spent all day changing plugs, replacing the coil, cleaning carb, adjusting points,( found stripped out adj. screw) what can I do next? Mechanically, I can usually fix things, but I need some 305 help. I set points with the" f" on flywheel. is that correct? could it be carb float ? Runs but very erratic....not smooth, however when accelerating up a grade seems pretty normal. Idles high and can't slow it down? can anyone help? Thanking any of you guys in advance.

Point gap is set on the high point of the cam, timing is set on the "F".

How long had it been since this bike had run before you got it? How far into the carbs did you go in cleaning them? Did you pull the jet holder and make sure the small holes were clear? Could be a problem with the air adjustment causing the idle problem if everything else is good.

305 still missing

Post by JonnyT » Mon Sep 22, 2014 8:00 am

Stan...Thanks so much for reaponding. I was just about to give up on the forum and just sell this thing. It was rough idleing (couldnt slow it down enough) Thought it might be coil so I replaced the coil. I also took carb off and called myself cleaning it thoroughly. I'm kinda leaning toward the timing or valves. When I got into the points, there was a stripped out set screw. I think I probably didn't set points or timing correctly. Do I have to have a timing light to set timing? I get kinda lost when it comes to that part. Any advice would be much appreciated. I really want to get it running well and then completely restore it.

Replies on the forum don't always come right away. Myself, some days I don't get on the forum, others I don't have time to do more than look, and sometime set back and see if someone else responds. don't give up hope here, lots of good people and good information. The more detail you give on what you've done, the more likely you can be helped. Also a lot of information can be found if you use the search function.

You can do a static timing with a test light. Ed's tuneup recipe is here;http://www.honda305.com/cb77_700/cb77-716.htm

It's for the CB and CL, but works for the CA, you just need to adjust one set of point and one carb instead of two.

The timing portion is basically hooking the lead of the test light to the points terminal and ground the light probe. Turn the engine and set so the light just comes on when the "F" mark is at the indicator. After it's running it is good to use a timing light, if you have one, to make sure it isn't over advancing at higher RPM (going past the double marks.)

Valve adjustment is critical to running well (and not making excessive noise.) This is done at TDC of each cylinder and on the "T" mark.

Thanks again to all and I have since learned how to access all this wonderful info! 305 is running great since I found that the base plate of the points had set screw holes with stripped threads. Rethreaded and set points and fised timing and valve adjustments and she runs like a top! Next up..........tires and possibly mufflers!
