Just bought a C72 as a restoration project so mine won't be running for some time. I got a reproduction manual from eBay which give most of the info you need. The ignition switch is a bit baffling and I don't have a key yet. I think off is one click clockwise. The handbook suggest on is one click anticlock and the other are lighting positions, I think.
Oil filter is a centrifugal type under the left side cover. It spins the dirt out of suspension. No filter element at all but you have to clean out the accumulated muck.
2b be careful when you remove the rubber tube that joins the two sides of the tank. Gas will leak out.
2c Yes. Look for Keyster on eBay
2d points are under cover on right side of head
2e. Fuse under side cover next to battery
Manuals are out there but look out for Bill Silver's guides. Full of very useful information on not screwing everything up.
Enjoy and learn

repairs
mvrk10256,
On the tank, you have several choices. Here again, you can read all about all of them using the search section. The easiest is a product called evaporust. It's a good product but the severity of your rust invasion will depend on if you seal it or not. If you do seal, I recommend POR-15. About $20 at NAPA. Good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,RW

Re: repairs
thanks, judging from the amount of rust (accumulated over the last 50 years) the bike has always been southern. the rust on the frame is minimal, and even the exhaust is in good shape ( no holes but a few rough patches) I will definitly look into getting both of those products to ensure years of good service.rustywrench wrote:mvrk10256,

THIS IS LENGTHY BUT MAY BE OF VALUE TO THE FORUM.

Some messages this person sent to me and my reply's and his reply's and other forum member messages to him.
Ya can judge for yourself his attitude at this time and possible positive forum involvement this person will offer/require.

I see ya don't have a clue of who or what I am with this and other forums.

I've seen the replies to you.
I recommend ya make a better effort to help yourself as those of us who know the bikes and where parts and help really is are watching ya as the way ya started (attitude and words) and this message don't show a person who is truly interested in these bikes and being accepted as one to help.

I dont get you guys. i couldnt really find an DIY or anything of the sort. and now i understand. you guys prefer to f**ck the new guy. for instance its kinda bloody hard to figure out the key positions on a NON RUNNING BIKE.
it is a shame that you guys are not more forthcoming. I think its stupid to let other people stumble and make the same damn mistakes you did. or are you simply trying to sell people shit and thats all your concerned about. do you guys get cuts on the profit made from books and so are tight lipped?
i dont need any parts yet. like i said the bike just needs basic maintenance, thats all.

You received the bike as a gift, so now it's your turn to invest some time and effort in learning about it. Use the search feature on this site--all your answers are there, and hundreds more.

BTW I will publish your question to me and my reply along with this one when I return from a Car Club meeting which I am president of.
We do the same there!
I think I/we pegged ya as I read your reply.

Second message to me.
wow this forum doesnt seem worth much. so what your saying is f**ck the new guy let him make the same mistakes we did. WTF. every car forum i have ever been on has been more helpful than this. I would appreciate that you take the time to answer my questions rather than write me a paragraph about how you wont answer them.
My reply.
The forum is a helpful group for sure.
That said most of us expect a bike owner to spend time obtaining literature with pics and parts books to get answers to questions which will come at many times as one works on the bike.
The forum has a FAQ/search section which can/will help.
We on the forum have been ignorant of the bikes when we first got them and just started working on them/gathering data (eBay) then when we had run the gamete and had tried to get info we ask for help at that time.
We do this as a hobby (most do) and sometimes get a feeling that new members are looking for the easy way and not to really learn the bike.
The answers to the questions take long and more words than the time I spent replying to your PM to me. ...............lm
First message to me.
I am in richardson, the bike is at my parents house in plano.
I was hoping i could get the answers to my questions....
My forum question.
Have ya attempted to locate a parts book for your bike?
I'm in KERRVILLE, TEXAS. ......................lm
His first question after joining forum.
Hi guys, I have a friend who bought a 305 dream about 8 months ago, put new tire and a new battery on the bike and never used it. It has been sitting in the parking lot of our apartment building for 8 months. there was some gas in the tank. When he bought it, the bike ran.
He gave me the bike for free since he was moving and knew i am mechanically oriented. I am looking to fix it and learn to ride on it.
Currently the bike does not run. so here go the questions
1.The key was broken off at the base so i can put the end of the key in the ignition with pliars and turn it, I will be visiting a locksmith shortly to get a new one made. However I do not know what the key positions are. I seem to have 5 different ones. Can someone please give me a rundown of the key positions?
2. I am a car guy but this is my first bike, and my first vehicle older than the 90's so i need to do a few things to get it running.
a. Oil change + filter - i plan on using honda 20w-40 is this ok? i saw the rant thread about oil... also is the oil filter paper/plastic? people say to clean it not replace it? confused?
b. i plan on pulling the tank, dumping the old gas and then cleaning out the inside of the tank? anything i should know about this?
c. do they sell a carb rebuild kit for this bike? what make and model carb do i have? it faces towards the back ofthe bike on the backsides of the heads right?
d. what needs to be done with the distributor? new points? where do i get plugs?
e. are there any fuses on the bike? cause i could not find them :(
is there anything else i need toknow?
sorry if this is redundant of other posts but i would greatly appreciate the answers to the questions
LM,
There are no 'free rides'--a bike might come to you free, as mine did to me, but the ride is not. The ride is up to the rider, and what he/she brings to the machine.
In my short experience on this forum I have learned some things the hard way. I have resisted editing some of my foolish posts so they can serve to remind me (and maybe others) of a beginner's ignorance and frustrations). But nowhere on this journey did I ever feel you deserved the term "dick".

Time will show what comes of this persons attitude as to what this forum has to offer and what the person thinks can/will furnish. ..................lm
