IGNITION COIL

Post by nevernotbusy » Tue Oct 14, 2014 4:41 pm

Hey y'all!

I just got my bike together with a battery and fresh fuel system, and the darn thing wouldn't start. The electric start motor makes a noise but nothin. SO, I go kickstarter. I spent a good couple hours kicking and nothing.

SO I check for spark, leaving the spark plug exposed a little to catch a glimpse of the arc. NOTHING. So I feel the ignition coil and it's warm. The battery is charged and lights come on, everything seems fine.

My guess is a bad ignition coil. OR I'm also wondering if it needs to sit overnight while connected to the battery to give me some spark finally. I'll try again soon, but I figured I'd reach out to you guys to see what you thought.

I've checked out Ignition Coils online, and found a couple. Is there a modern alternative or one from a different model that would work?

Thanks!!

I have my eye on this coil: Seems to me like any 12v coil should work, no?

No, the Dream calls for a coil with 4-5 ohms primary resistance.

Did you check the timing and points-clean and gap? You could have a bad connection between the plug wires and the cap. I cut the wires off a little and rescrewed the caps on when I was having spark issues, made a world of difference.

Have you checked the battery voltage? Even if its new it could be low, affecting your spark.

Did you make sure you were getting a good ground when you were testing for spark?

Thanks for the clues. I haven't checked on that, but the ignition coil's contacts are super rusty and the whole thing looks very worn. The battery read around 11.7 on the volt meter.

I'll look into some of this stuff. Thanks!
