CA77 spark issue

Post by Mkaz54 » Sat Aug 19, 2017 6:21 pm

Hi guys, I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can help.
I have ... I think it's a 1965? Honda dream 305, I just finished refurbishing it a few days ago, except the motor. All I did there was clean the carburetor and get new plugs. Here's the problem, it's only getting spark on the right side (normal), the left side only with a fresh plug and it only last a short time. I've checked the points, and timing 2 million times, (point setting .014)( plug setting .026)( timing is set on "F") I switched the plugs wires... left wire went to the right, and right wire went to the left. thinking the problem should follow. Not the case, and I think that's kinda weird that the problem stayed the same. Spark on the right side only, when I pull the plug from the left side and hold it near the head, spark will arc. But when I ground the plug....no spark. has anyone else ever have this problem? If so, please share it .

Thank you all and I'm sorry my question was so long
Mike

Things in order.
Please show your location at the sign in page.
What type coil do you have?
Metal or Cast resin?
If metal did you cut 3/8 inch off each end of both wires.
If resin cut the plug ends back.
As I recall when you get spark while holding a GAP the plug is fouled.

The coil is original, looks to be plastic

G'day Mkaz54

Does this mean that the plug is carboning up? A build-up of soot or carbon can create a short circuit and the plug often will not spark.

As Loud Mouse will say, also check the valve timing as well as the ignition timing.

I chased a fine looking carbuerettor running rich around and around for a long time before replacing the carb and now it appears to be running fine.

Maybe post some photos of the plugs once they stop firing - people will be able to tell if it is running rich, burning oil or running fine.
Thanks.

Regards

Muddy

Thanks muddy,
The plug thats not firing is soaked with fuel, I was playing with it a little more tonight and put in a fresh plug. It started right up and was running good at high rpm's, when I try and let it idle.... the left side stops firing. I can tell by the sound and looking at the tailpipe, when I give it gas, it comes back on....I'm sratching my head.
