i got everything nearly sorted. except one minor issue:
the neutral switch will not light unless the bulb is grounded to the frame... but with the way the bulb is mounted (i did find the little rubber number) ... i do not see how it could ever contact the frame.
cheapo tip- a little tinfoil under the bulb in the black rubber neutral light mount made the neutral indicator lamp about twice as bright.
so close...

Neutral light switch is behind the right crankcase cover and its wire is one of the 4 popping up through the hole in the crankcase (usually encased in black sheathing or heat shrink tubing).    Green and yellow, I think.  Ground that wire and if you get illumination at the neutral light you know you have a bad switch.
