A Tale Of Two ScramblersA Tale Of Two ScramblersI have been quite busy the last month or so! Two CL72s and a CT70H for my painter, full restos on all three bikes. First bike is for my friend Bill, he's a new member on the forum, hdwings, too shy to post so far. He's a retired machinist, and had a CL72 in high school. We started out with a good running, matching #s CL72. Unfortunately, there was some previously undetected damage to the frame, so we scrapped that one for a really nice frame that I had. All the while Bill's asking about a 305 top end, what he really wanted was a CL77 in high school, but they didn't come out until '65. I had a CB77 cafe project with a fresh engine build that I had lost interest in, and was just sitting in the shop. We agreed to transplant the CB engine into the CL72 chasis, a resto-mod if you like. We had to change the valve cover so we'd have the correct mount for the top hanger bolt. At that time we noticed that the CB studs were longer, so Bill machined up some brass spacers to compensate for the difference. We fired her up on Friday, with straight pipes, and man did she roar! Here's some pics of Bills build so far. We're getting down to the nitty gritty, paint, seat, and a couple missing parts.

For $250 for the frame and swing arm, I don't think I'll ever paint another frame! It is a matching #s 64 that I have been collecting parts for the last couple years. It's coming out so nice, I don't think I'm going to ride it, another first for me! The body parts will go to the painter soon, both aluminum fenders, side covers, and tank, for him to work his magic on. I will post more pics of both projects as they move forward, and may even sneak a few of the CT70H in as well. The paint on it is amazing, candy emerald green. Thats my 11 month old yellow lab in the back ground. She's a rescue dog from Taiwan. I tell everyone her name was going to be "potsticker" :-)
