Still puzzled by this reply.
Electronically the circuit on the left is identical to the circuit on the right.

I might know because I'm an electronics engineer with 35 years of experience.

I'm accustomed to seeing the ckt of something as it really is when installed.
In the case of these engines the points are at the end of the circuit.
12 volts comes through the condenser to the points then ground. . ............lm

How do you set the timing if the plate isn't mounted using the slotted holes?
Is the collar around the points cam adjustable?
The instructions are confusing indeed!...……..
How do you move the "stator" to the "f" mark?
Why remove OEM rotor?
Where is the black side of the rotor?
Maybe the mounting plate needs to be turned over?

I fitted the ignition and it would not start so I removed the plugs but kept them wired to the coil, just touching the engine block. Then I used a timing light and spun the motor with the starter. This way I could see the timing being way off. I then removed the plate screws and turned the plate until the F mark lined up up in the strobe light. Then I knew where to drill the new holes. After that no way to change the timing of course unless you make new slotted holes. I tried turning over the ignition plate but that did not work. No need to remove the OEM rotor.

Looking at the pictures it seems to me that by drilling the extra hole in the base plate you have retarded the ignition timing by about twenty degrees.
By coincidence? this is the amount of advance that the advance retard-unit applies between tickover (static timing) and full advance.
Does the Tytronic unit have any inbuilt electronic advance so were you perhaps getting two helpings of ignition advance, one from the electronics and one from the (still in place) mechanical advance - retard unit?
Just a thought but it seems that, if your experience is typical, this unit isn't really that simple to fit and time up.
The supplied instructions aren't actually that great but the manufacturer should be able to assist.

There are 4 magnets in the ring that fits over the cams so that would suggest there is a form of electronic advance. Of course there still is the mechanical advance too. When I tested it with the timing strobe light the advance was correct, no double advance. It runs very well too.
