Timing set-up on my CA77

Post by joeweir1 » Tue Mar 25, 2008 8:45 pm

I've been going over my bike trying to get it ready for this riding season was adjusting timing and noticed when setting timing mark on one cam lobe and then rotating it to the next my test light comes on sooner by about a weak 1/16th of and inch meaning too advanced. The one lines up perfect but points just open too soon on the other.Would this mean the one lobe is worn more than the other?Only thing I could think of that would cause this?thanks

Joe,

Can you elaborate on which one is right on and which one is advanced? (RH or LH)

It's a CA77 single points not CL77 or CB77.Does not have RH or LH.

Have you continued to to turn the crank and watch both sides as the points cam comes around? Could be the PC advances and stays there when you have turned the crank the first 180. ..........lm

LM-Not sure what you mean by watching both sides.?One thing I noticed is that I can grab the PC and turn it left and right ever so slightly before I feel the spring tension. It has more movement than another engine I have on the bench. The movement is about equal to how much my timing is off on one of the pistons.Only thing I can think of to cause slop is where the end of the points cam shaft connects in the slot to the advance unit?Sound right?thanks

I mean both timing marks/side on the rotor. You mentioned that when you set one mark the other came in different so I wonder if when you turn the rotor around several times does the timing change on the first and look similar to the second mark. .......lm

ok-I will have to go over it again, but after setting it seems one mark stays dead on and the other is off.Seems to stay consistent, but I will check it out again.
