Is it a good or bad idea to apply a thin coating of lubricant to the throttle valves and bores to enhance the sliding action?
If good, any recommendations?

The slides shouldn't be sticking in the first place, and if they are, lubrication is a band-aid, not a fix. The slides should move smoothly in the carb bore with no lube at all. If your slides are sticking, there's mechanical interference, either because the bores are warped due to excessive tightening of the two nuts that hold the carbs in place, or because of crud/corrosion in the bores if the carbs have been sitting unused for a long time. Those problems need to be addressed directly by removing the mechanical interference, not with lube. Any lube you put in there is going to cook off eventually from the heat, and possibly make the slides stick more. When I rebuild my carbs I just spray everything with WD-40 and wipe off the excess.
