Some Qs on "Ed's Recipe"

Post by slopokecr » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:30 pm

Im new at this mechanic stuff, but an eager learner. I'm getting ready to tackle "Eds Recipe" for my CA77. After studying it, I have a few questions:

1) Why vise grips? why would the 14mm wrench/socket make it "go past center."

2) Is the 12v lightbulb gizmo something I make? If so,is there a certain 12v bulb i buy, and where do the wires attach to it? Could a multimeter accomplish the same task (dont know how to use one, but can borrow from my neighbor)

3)Does it matter where on the points I attach the alligator clip?

4)I assume recipe works the same for single pts/carb (CA77) 305 models?

Thanks!!!!!

1) The main thing is to have to be able to control it to get it exactly on. It take some fine tuning by moving it back and forth.

2) You can make one, or buy a 12 v test light at an auto parts store. The one I used is an inexpensive store bought tester.

3) Look closely at the points and you will see the insulator. Connect anyplace on the hot side of the insulator. If you get it right, the light goes on and off when the points open and close, if it's wrong, the light won't light. If you short it out, it will spark, then readjust your clip :)

4) I have a CB77, and I am also new at this so I can't help here.

the only thing i had questions on upon originally doing it was the location of the aligator clips.
Ed was good enough to get on the phone with me and walk me through any questions I had, even picked it up a second time when i called back half an hour later, which was far too late in the evening in his timezone.

I am by far no expert but, why not use a timing light? Using a timing light allows you to check the advance and make sure it is not over advancing.
