CB77 Trouble with Air Cleaner Tubes

Post by Loudo » Mon Jan 12, 2009 12:13 am

I purchased new air cleaners from Retro Bikes for my '63 CB77. While trying to fit them and the air tubes onto the bike it seems the tubes have magically become about 1/2" or more too long. The cleaners will squeeze into their brackets, but when the tubes can be pushed not a mm further onto the carbs or the cleaner flanges they are still too long. I can't compare the whole arrangement to the stock condition because the cleaners on the bike when I bought it were made of chicken wire and foam and the tubes were just shoved in as far as needed. Has anyone else used these Retro Bike filters? Is the recommended fix to simply cut off an appropriate amount of tube and use a hose clamp on the cleaner end of the tube?

My pics do not meet my normally stratospheric standards, but here they are:

Ah...that's good to hear. Thanks, Ed.

I will take another look at it tonight and try to figure out a way the pieces can be bolted together that moves the cleaners back a bit yet still allows the side covers to be mounted.

I've taken these photos of the air cleaner location on the right side of the bike. I note that the main bracket is welded so the problem Ed describes must be the bracket pieces bolted onto either end. Both of these pieces look like original equipment, at least to me there is no obvious cob job in place. I also don't see any slotted holes. Most puzzling.

If anyone could take a glance at their CB77 air cleaner frame and note differences between yours and what you see in my pics I would be very appreciative. Ed, you are also welcome to comment further but only if you can keep it brief.

Funny, I asked Retro some time ago if what they had were CL tubes, they sure looked like it and they told me no, they were CB tubes and did not have any for the CL. So if you need 'em I know they used to have them in stock.
