Nice repair, Gunner. Motor looks lovely, too! What silver did you use?

Steve,

I used Dupli-Color "Cast Coat Aluminum" Engine Enamel on the side covers and starter. Everything else on the motor is just bare metal, either cleaned or polished.

The frame is painted and the tank, fenders and side covers are in primer. Most everything is clean, but needs a bit more detail and polishing.

Now, if I can remember how to put it back together :)

Do you think using the same Dupli-Color enamel on the engine would be "too much" after using it on crankcases and starter? In leu of not having access to a large enough beadblaster, I'd like to have some alternatives to just scrubbing, which most people aren't too happy with the results of. Or... does anyone have any idea how much it might cost for a shop to beadblast? Maybe just a super ballpark to get an idea?

The bike is coming along great. I'm really excited to see any progress you've made.

LM has advised, in the past, that the crankcases were naked; but, for the sake of my own sanity and future cleaning preferences, I'll be doing just as you are thinking of, Scott. I think, in the absence of a sooperdooper media blaster, we mere mortals must improvise and paint.

If I had the blasting facilities I would get the casings nice and smooth then laquer & bake.

Scott,

If it wasn't for this web site, I am sure I would have painted it all. I like the look of the painted and unpainted. If I did paint the other parts, it would be in a slightly different color trying to get this look.

I just cleaned the aluminum with engine cleaner and a brush. I used carb cleaner or mineral spirits in the tight spaces. On the cooling fins I used a nylon abrasive brush on an electric drill.

My son and I worked on it last weekend. He polished on the wheel hubs and they are looking great. I did mostly sanding on the primed tank, fender and side covers. My neighbor primed them at his body shop and he put a light spatter of black paint on it. I sanded it so it removed the black. I thought this was a cool idea, I learn something new every day :) It's ready for the top coat of paint.

I didn't plan to touch the front forks or light as they were in good shape. But since I am this far, I am going to paint these also. I can't wait to start putting it back together. I will post some pictures when I have something to show. Right now, I just have a bunch of parts :)

This weekend a little more progress. I painted the front end, and my son finished the polishing of the wheels. He took the tank, fenders and side covers to be painted this morning, so I am looking forward to seeing these when they return.

Attached is a in-progress picture of the front end of the frame, still masked, the headlight and wheels. And of course my dog who always likes to get in my pictures :)
