I purchased a set of new spokes and rims from overseas. I noticed that half the the spokes head's have either a 90° angle at the end, or a 45° angle. I can't find any mention of this. Does anyone know the reason for this, or where to use the different ones.
Still trying to figure out how to lace em up based on a few resources I've found online. Just don't want to really start until I know why the spokes are bent at different angles.

The attached photo is of a CL77 wheel but the following expanation still apllies: the spokes are installed alternatively in the hub from the inside (use the 45 degree spokes) and the outside (use the 90 degree spokes. The outside spokes in the photos are the ones you can see the head. Hope this helps

Start with the 9 spokes that go from outside in. Put the first one next to valve stem hole, skip 3 holes and install the neat one. Flip wheel over, and install the next outside in set, the reasons why will be obvious as you go along. If you have an old honda wheel, match them up as you're lacing, and it will save you much grief. These are very simplified instuctions, but should get you started in the right direction.

Phase 1 (lace each side - 45° spokes going under)
Phase 2 (lace opposite side - 90° spokes going over - Drop spokes in from above)
Phase 2 - Laced
Phase 3 (Flip wheel over and drop 45° spokes in just as done in phase 2)
Voilà - I think the main thing overlooked in instructions is the ORDER in which the spokes are dropped in and how. I found
this video to be a great help in that respect.

An excellent explanation all around. Makes me think there should be a section in forum called "definitive answers to common questions" where administrators could put threads like this. Would save some folks from having to answer same question over and over. Just a thought.
Your wheels came out looking real good, Scott. I'll give it a try if I ever get to "phase 2."
